Revit Families: what are they and how to custom create them.

A recap of what are Revit families and how to use them and custom create them.

In Autodesk Revit, a family is a collection of building components that can be used to create a project. Families can represent a wide range of building elements, such as walls, doors, windows, floors, roofs, ceilings, furniture, and more.

Families are created using the Family Editor, which is a specialized interface within Revit for creating and modifying families. The Family Editor allows you to create the geometry and properties of the family, and to save it as a reusable template for use in multiple projects.

Families can be either system families or user-defined families. System families are included with Revit and are available in every project. They include a wide range of building components, such as walls, doors, windows, floors, roofs, and more. User-defined families are custom families that are created by users and can be specific to a particular project or company.

To use a family in a project, you simply need to select it from the list of available families in the "Project Browser" and place it in the desired location. You can then use the "Properties" tool to modify the properties of the family, such as its size, material, and appearance.

Creating custom families in Autodesk Revit allows you to create unique building components that are not included in the default library of families. Here is a tutorial on how to create custom families in Revit:
  1. To create a new family in Revit, go to the Application menu and select "New > Family". This will open the "New Family" dialog box.
  2. In the "New Family" dialog box, select the type of family you want to create (e.g. Wall, Door, Window, etc.) and click "OK". This will open a new, untitled family file in the Revit interface.
  3. The interface for creating custom families is similar to the interface for working on a project file. You can use the various tools and options available (e.g. Sketch, Model, Annotate, etc.) to create the geometry and properties of your custom family.
  4. To create geometry for the custom family, go to the "Sketch" tab and use the various sketching tools (e.g. Line, Arc, Rectangle, etc.) to draw the shape of the family. You can also use dimensions and constraints to control the size and position of the geometry.
  5. To add properties to the custom family, go to the "Properties" tab and click on the "Add Parameter" button. This will open the "Add Family Parameter" dialog box.
  6. In the "Add Family Parameter" dialog box, enter a name and type for the parameter (e.g. Width, Height, Material, etc.) and click "OK". The parameter will be added to the list of properties for the custom family.
  7. To assign a value to a property parameter, go to the "Properties" tab and click on the "Edit Type" button. This will open the "Type Properties" dialog box.
  8. In the "Type Properties" dialog box, enter a value for the property parameter and click "OK". The value will be applied to the custom family.
  9. Once you have finished creating the custom family, go to the Application menu and select "Save As". This will open the "Save As" dialog box.
  10. In the "Save As" dialog box, enter a name for the custom family and select a location to save it. You can also choose to save it to a custom location by clicking the "Browse" button and selecting a folder.
  11. Click "Save" to save the custom family. It will be added to the list of available families in the "Project Browser" on the left side of the interface.
I hope this tutorial helps you understand how to create custom families in Revit. Let me know if you have any further questions or need more information
